Former school catches fire

NILES — Resident Jan Beeler said when she looked out the back window of her South Main Street home around 2:30 a.m. Monday, she could see the flashing lights of fire trucks and smoke coming from the former Garfield School building on West Third Street. “I saw some flashing outside. It was the old cafeteria and gymnasium section of the building on fire,” said Beeler, who with a few other neighbors went outside and watched Niles fire crews battle the blaze. “I think a lot of the neighborhood was still asleep,” she said. Five-day celebration set for Robbins Ave. grounds

NILES —The Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish summer festival will be held today to Sunday at the church grounds, 381 Robbins Ave. Joe Merlo, festival chairman, said the event will include amusement rides, games, bingo, musical entertainment, and the popular food. He said the food will include everything from pizza, twists and cheese puffs to sausage sandwiches and desserts. WEATHERSFIELD — Stephen Fizet Jr. spent the summer between his junior and senior years at Niles McKinley High School at boot camp. He spent 79 days at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois in the summer of 1962 and then spent his two-week Christmas break that year on board the USS John Hood (DD-65). “There were a lot of young kids on that ship,” Fizet, 72, said. Niles man accepts plea deal

WARREN — A Niles man, sentenced last week to 12 years in a robbery case that included a parole violation, had three more years added to his prison term after he pleaded guilty Thursday to a kidnapping charge stemming from an October 2016 incident in Weathersfield. Joseph Leasock, 51, of Grant Street, was sentenced by Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Peter J. Kontos. Leasock, after initially turning down a plea bargain from the state, changed his mind and arranged through his attorney, John Juhasz, for a plea hearing in Kontos’ courtroom. Champion teams honored at Eastwood Mall

NILES — Nearly 100 people, including local leaders, parents and fans, gathered Wednesday at center court at Eastwood Mall to honor the “Champions of Champion.” The event honored the Champion High School Golden Flashes boys baseball team and girls softball team, who each won the Division III state championship in early June.
