US stocks rise after shaky start to cut losses for week

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose Friday and trimmed their losses from a shaky week. That was even though the bond market, which has been the center of Wall Street’s action, remained jumpy and continued to add pressure. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% for just its second gain in the six days since setting its all-time high last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 517 points, or 1%, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 0.4%. HOWLAND — Justin Keating, a senior at Howland High School, has spent time in Washington, D.C. serving as a Senate page. Keating said he has always been intrigued by the political process. He applied for the United States Senate Page Program after learning that it was available to qualified seniors. For the three-week summer session hosted in June, 30 pages were selected. The committee considered GPA, participation in extracurricular activities and leadership potential. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump announced Friday that his administration will allow more beef to be temporarily imported into the U.S. without triggering higher tariffs, which drew swift pushback from cattle producers and conservative rural-state Republicans. Sewer line break affects Girard Creek

GIRARD — The Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer’s Office is advising residents of Girard that Girard Creek in Liberty Park has negatively been impacted by a line break on a nearby county sanitary sewer line. Officials said the situation is being addressed and the public is being advised to stay out of the creek until repairs on the sewer line are completed.
