Howland library breaks ground for renovation

HOWLAND — They’re turning the page at the Howland branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library with a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday that kicked off its $2.2 million in renovations. Easterseals camp supports children and caregivers

YOUNGSTOWN — A summer camp offered to local children by Easterseals of Northeast Ohio is not only benefiting them but the grandparents, aunts and uncles taking care of them. Called “Kinship Summer Camp,” the program held for seven weeks four days per week in June and July, has children spending four hours at the camp while their caregivers are given time to spend on their own. The free event marks the 90th anniversary of 6-year-old Neil Armstrong’s first airplane ride from Warren Airways, which is now the site of First Flight Lunar Module. Bristol reviews fire department staffing

BRISTOL — Township trustees and fire officials are reviewing options on how to get more staff at the fire department. Trustees met at the fire department recently with about 15 residents to seek suggestions and ideas such as all full-time staff, all part-time or a combination, and how to pay them. Roger French, retired Bristol fire chief, said having full-time firefighters would be the option that would best benefit the fire department. Warren man’s appeal denied in kidnapping case

WARREN — A Warren man convicted in September of the kidnapping and felonious assault of a 70-year-old woman he met at a grocery store had his conviction and sentence upheld by the 11th District Court of Appeals. John Baker, 65, was convicted on the charges by a jury after a three-day trial before Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Sarah Kovoor, who later sentenced him to 19-to-24.5 years in prison. Convicted sex offender will be retried on other counts

WARREN — The Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that it plans to retry Danny McFadden, 76, of Niles, on 17 charges of child rape that a jury was unable to reach a verdict on during his Nov. 7 trial. A news release from the prosecutor’s office states that the Ohio 11th District Court of Appeals dismissed McFadden’s appeal of his conviction on 11 counts of gross sexual imposition for which he was sentenced to 11.5 years in prison on Dec. 17 by Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Cynthia Westcott.
