State funds slated for Valley projects

COLUMBUS — Gov. Mike DeWine signed the state’s 2027-28 capital budget bill into law Monday, meaning $3.7 billion in funding should soon be flowing to a wide swath of community, economic development and education projects across the state.

The capital budget includes slightly more than $16 million for projects in Mahoning and Trumbull counties, $10.7 million of which is allocated for improvements at Youngstown State University’s main campus. It also is receiving $3.5 million for its new Steubenville campus in Jefferson County.

Of projects receiving a share of $2.5 million in non-YSU projects in Mahoning County, the top recipients are $750,000 for the Youngstown Innovation Hub for Aerospace and Defense in downtown Youngstown, $350,000 for the Nebo Park Miracle League Project in Struthers and $250,000 for improvements to Coy Park in Green Township.

Of projects receiving a share of $3.02 million in Trumbull County, the top three recipients are $650,000 for improvements to Niles parks (plus an additional $300,000 for baseball field improvements in Niles Waddell Park), $450,000 for the Trumbull County Regional Fire Training Facility in Howland and $400,000 to expand the Akron Children’s Warren Health Center.

Additionally, some 10 capital projects in Columbiana County will share $2.5 million in funding.

“The investments we are announcing today build upon the work we have done to strengthen communities, support our workforce, and grow the economy over the last seven years,” DeWine said. “The projects outlined in this budget will improve our parks, county fairgrounds and historical sites; upgrade schools and classrooms to support the future workforce; promote safe and independent living for Ohioans with disabilities; continue building the mental healthcare system; and more. This capital budget impacts all Ohioans today and for the future.”

Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel said, “This capital budget is about investing in the things that make strong communities possible.”

Because the capital spending bill passed as an emergency measure, the funding can begin to be released immediately at the start of the 2027 fiscal year, which in Ohio is July 1.

Starting at $3.85/week.
