LaBrae senior revives pledge at high school
WARREN — Nathan Lutz, a graduating high school senior and member of LaBrae’s Turning Point USA club, told Trumbull County Commissioners at their workshop meeting Tuesday that the club was able to return to saying the Pledge of Allegiance at the high school and celebrating Veterans Day in the district.
Lutz, 18, said the school group supports activism and civil service.
“We brought back the pledge of allegiance each Monday morning,” he said. “Students rise and say the Pledge of Allegiance. They don’t just say the pledge; they say an introduction beforehand because we did not want our students to focus on mindless allegiance. We want them to have context.”
Lutz is president of the student group, which was founded one year ago.
“We started it because we are passionate about bringing back recognition of American values,” he said.
The organization also has worked to have a Veterans Day program in the school after 15 years without a formal program.
“We now have a way to honor our veterans in and out of our community,” he said.
“On this Veterans Day we honored a veteran that did not complete high school,” Lutz said. “He was drafted and went to Vietnam. We were able to work with the administration to get an honorary diploma presented to him. He is able to complete his legacy as a soldier and now as a graduate of LaBrae High School.
The organization is obtaining a large American flag that will be placed in the high school gymnasium.
“We are dedicating it to the seniors who are leaving LaBrae High School after graduation,” he said. “The old flag will be taken to the board of education office and dedicated to members of our community who have served.”
Lutz emphasized that the high school chapters of Turning Point do not focus on political issues that the college-level chapters affiliated with slain founder Charlie Kirk do.
After graduation, Lutz plans to attend Ohio University. He will major in finance with a minor in political science.
