Warren man, imprisoned twice, indicted again
Staff report
WARREN — A city man who previously served two stints in prison was among more than three dozen people indicted Wednesday by a Trumbull County grand jury.
Stephen J. Mazzola, 29, of Rolling Meadows Drive, will be arraigned sometime in the next few weeks on two felony counts of strangulation and a felony count of domestic violence. A police report on the incident was not immediately available.
In February 2023, Mazzola was sentenced to a total of 15 months in state prison for a variety of convictions. He appeared Feb. 1, 2023, before two judges on three cases in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
Judge Sean O’Brien gave him a six-month term on a conviction for aggravated possession of drugs stemming from a 2015 arrest by Howland police, according to newspaper archives.
O’Brien made that sentence consecutive to two sentences Mazzola received the same day from Judge Cynthia Westcott for two convictions — one a failure to comply connected to a June 24, 2022, police chase where Mazzola led police out of Niles in a pursuit that reached 95 mph. The defendant ultimately was found by police hiding in an attic, prosecutors said.
In the second case, Mazzola pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to register as a repeat violent offender. The judges, who gave the defendant credit for seven months he already served in jail, said Mazzola’s criminal record made him ineligible for probation.
Before those sentences, Mazzola served two years in prison after pleading guilty to burglary and kidnapping charges connected to an October 2018 incident in Warren, where a 22-year-old man was shot, according to newspaper archives.
