Commissioners OK abatement for Warren company

WARREN — Charles Manufacturing Company on Wednesday received unanimous support from Trumbull County Commissioners to receive a 10-year, 75% abatement on a $275,000 addition for six office spaces at its facilities at 3021 Sferra Ave. NW in the Warren Commerce Park.

The vote on the abatement request was delayed for a week when Commissioner Denny Malloy sought to determine if commissioners in general could have greater say in the percentage of abatement requests and the length of time the abatement would last.

Trumbull County Assistant Planning Director Nicholas Coggins said at Tuesday’s weekly workshop that the determination of the size and scope of abatement requests are made in the communities in which the companies are located. In this case, it was Warren City Council and its administration reviewed Charles Manufacturing Company’s request for expansion and approved it.

Malloy noted the week delay allowed the commissioners to learn more details about the company and about the county’s enterprise zone process.

In other action Wednesday, commissioners:

• Accepted a $1.75 million grant from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to be used for a new roof on the Trumbull County Justice Center.

• Approved a letter from the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office that it will temporarily cease providing overweight hauling permits because of the increased potential for road damage attributed to frost conditions.

• Approved the purchase of two in-bed salt spreader boxes from Grainger in the amount of $12,125.76. The county will be reimbursed 75% of the total amount through an approved Bureau of Workers’ Compensation grant, leaving Trumbull’s final cost to be $3,031.34.

• Approved in a 2-1 vote the ability for the county to sign up for an electric aggregation program. The cost of the program has not been determined because of the volatility of market prices that are being affected because of America’s and Israel’s war in Iran.

It is expected that once the conflict deescalates, energy prices will stabilize, so they can obtain the lowest and best price.

The providers will be recommended by the County Commissioner Association of Ohio and Palmer Energy. Commissioner Rick Hernandez voted against the aggregation agreement because he wanted to provide other companies opportunities to provide bids based on their programs.

Starting at $3.23/week.
