Suspect in officer-involved shooting held

WARREN — A Toronto, Ohio, man is being held without bond after an officer-involved shooting in Howland.

Collin Gilmore, 25, pleaded not guilty to a fourth-degree charge of inducing panic in front of Warren Municipal Court Judge Natasha Natale on Tuesday morning. Natale ordered a risk assessment to help establish an appropriate bond.

The charge is related to a Friday incident, which occurred in front of the former Wahaka Taco restaurant and across from the township fire and police stations on state Route 46, leaving a portion of the road closed between East Market and High streets for several hours.

A police report from the incident states that an officer was working an off-duty detail near the road when Gilmore approached him.

The report does not detail what happened next, only that Gilmore was arrested and transported to the hospital, there was an officer-involved nonfatal shooting and that officers seized a 2003 Lexus RX3.

A Tuesday morning news release from the department states Gilmore was released from the hospital and booked into the Trumbull County jail afterward on his charge, reiterating that no Howland officers were injured during the incident.

The release states officer Brandon McDaniels was the officer involved and that he is on paid administrative leave. The investigation is still active, according to the release.

“The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues to conduct the independent investigation, while the Howland Township Police Department is handling the internal review and use-of-force evaluation in accordance with department policy,” the release states.

Gilmore is set to appear back in court on Friday, records show.

Starting at $3.23/week.
