Trumbull targets blight with demolition campaign

WARREN — The Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership has initiated a countywide demolition project targeting dozens of vacant, unsafe and blighted buildings across Trumbull County.

The effort is supported by a $6.2 million grant from the Ohio Department of Development’s 2024 Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program.

The Trumbull County Land Bank, operated by the partnership, secured state funding to demolish residential and commercial properties. Local matching funds were provided by the city of Warren for its share of the project and by the county commissioners for areas outside Warren.

“Removing these long-neglected properties is about more than demolition, it’s about restoring pride and opportunity to neighborhoods across Trumbull County,” said Matt Martin, the partnership’s executive director. “This funding allows us to address blight in Trumbull County communities that previously hadn’t been able to address longtime nuisance properties.”

The initiative includes 44 demolitions, with 43 already completed and 12 more in progress. Targeted properties range from abandoned homes to commercial sites, including a long-vacant hotel at 1600 Motor Inn Drive in Liberty Township.

Additional demolitions are underway in Braceville, Hubbard Township, Johnston, Mecca, Cortland, West Farmington, Brookfield, Newton Township, Warren Township, Weathersfield, Niles, Lordstown and Girard.

“This project is a win for Trumbull County,” county Commissioner Denny Malloy said. “By investing ARP dollars, we tripled our impact and are able to address some issues in rural areas and other parts of the county that these dollars don’t always reach.”

Beyond demolition, the partnership plans to collaborate with local partners to explore redevelopment options, such as new housing, economic development projects, green spaces or community-driven initiatives tailored to local needs.

The Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership, a leader in neighborhood revitalization since 2012, has overseen the demolition of more than 1,300 blighted properties, rehabilitated numerous homes and supported community-focused development efforts throughout Warren and Trumbull County.

Starting at $3.23/week.
