Stolen truck found at auto shop, police find multiple tampered VINs
WARREN — Police arrested a man at a Warren auto shop Tuesday after finding a stolen truck and multiple vehicles with tampered vehicle identification numbers.
Police arrested James Clay Jr., 40, charging him with fourth-degree felony charges of receiving stolen property and two counts of VIN tampering.
Officers responded to Clays Trucking, 776 Niles Road SE, around 5:33 p.m. after the victim said he saw his stolen 2011 gray Chevrolet Silverado in the shop’s lot.
The man told police he reported the vehicle stolen and filed a report with Niles police on Aug. 14. The man said he saw his vehicle listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace that morning.
The victim’s girlfriend messaged the seller, who directed her to the shop’s back lot. Police initially could not find the truck outside.
A relative of the shop’s owner arrived and contacted Clay Jr., who said the truck was in the mechanic bay. Clay Jr. claimed he bought the truck from a friend for $3,000, showing a bill of sale written out on a piece of notebook paper, and told police he did not know it was stolen.
Inside the bay, police found the victim’s gray Silverado with tampered vehicle identification numbers. The VIN matched a 2008 red Chevrolet Silverado, not the victim’s truck.
A red Silverado in the lot also had its VIN plate removed and stickers missing.
The victim identified his truck by its damage and items in the bed, and he had keys to the vehicle and its tonneau cover.
Both trucks were towed to Mays Towing for further inspection by the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s vehicle unit.
