Warren resident arrested following dispute over toys

NORTH BLOOMFIELD — Trumbull County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a North Bloomfield home Christmas evening to assist with an incident involving punches and toys.

After arriving at the home and questioning a woman who later said she was struck by Johnathan York, police eventually arrested York on Monday on a charge of domestic violence.

The woman’s father was contacted by a downstairs resident of the same building. The resident said they could hear screaming and what sounded like a physical altercation, as stated in the report.

The downstairs resident contacted dispatch after the father disconnected with him.

While walking up the driveway, an officer stated they observed York, the suspect, outside the residence. He was carrying a box and was heading to place it in the rear of a white van located in the driveway, the report states.

The officers stated in their report that they had visited the residence “multiple times” in the past, in reference to the two involved individuals fighting. When asked what happened, York told officers that he tripped over a fence at the residence. “Due to him tripping, he hit his head on the ground,” the officer wrote.

After finding the victim in the kitchen of the residence, the officer noticed bruising on both of her arms, from elbow to shoulder. The officer further noted bruising around her neck, that her ear was bright red and that she had multiple scratches “all over” her arms.

The victim told the responding officer that nothing happened. After advising her that police received a call for a physical altercation, she told the officer York chased her, grabbed her by both arms and screamed at her to stop yelling.

The victim explained to officers that she and York had a disagreement over York’s daughter’s toys being located in a bag with a neighboring child’s toys.

When asked if she believed York was going to harm her, the woman told the officers “yes.”

York was then arrested, and while in the rear seat of a cruiser, allegedly “started to slam his head off of the center divider,” the officer’s report stated

While the suspect was transported, the victim was advised to “just tell the truth” to an officer.

“The victim said fine, and stated when she was running from the suspect, she ran into the bedroom on the other side of the bed,” according to the report.

“The suspect ran up behind the victim and punched her three times on the right side of her body. The victim was struck twice on her right arm and once on her back. The suspect then grabbed the victim by the neck, but did not impair her ability to breathe and turned her around. The suspect then yelled at the victim that she needed to stop yelling because he was not going to hurt her.”

After York was transported to the Trumbull County jail, the woman was advised to speak with a victims advocate of Trumbull County courts in reference to a restraining order against York.
