Scrap fundraiser to benefit build of Safety City in Cortland

CORTLAND — The Lions Club and Cortland-based Northeast Ohio Junk Removal are teaming up to get the city closer to its fundraising goal for Safety City with a scrap metal drive.

The Cortland Lions Club will accept scrap metal items noon to 5 p.m. April 15 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 16 at Willow Park. Large dumpsters will be located by the cardboard recycling bins.

Northeast Ohio Junk Removal also will pick up scrap metal from residents inside the city limits who cannot bring their items to Willow Park. Those items must be brought out to the driveway or garage.

Northeast Ohio Junk Removal will sell the scrap, and all proceeds will go toward the construction of Safety City at Pearl Park. The interactive space, set to be built on the site of the current basketball court, will include miniature buildings, street signs and painted streets and also could have working traffic lights.

Safety City is expected to serve both as a play space and a learning tool, where police, fire and EMS, schools and community groups will be able to host events and teach children about safety.

The project’s fundraising goal is $45,000. The city already has received some donations, including $15,000 from Lou Wollam Chevrolet and Chevy All Stars.

Items that will be accepted in the scrap metal fundraiser include refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, lawnmowers, copper and brass items, nails and metal storage cabinets. A full list of items will be posted on the city’s website.

“Please start accumulating your metal scrap items now to support this worthwhile project benefiting the children of our area,” Mayor Deidre Petrosky wrote in an announcement for the drive.

Starting at $3.85/week.
