Champion approves replacement roof project
Funds lef tover from OSFC will cover the cost of improvements
CHAMPION — The board of education has approved a $607,402 roof replacement project at Champion High School with remaining Ohio School Facilities Commission funds from the new school complex to be used to cover costs.
Superintendent John Grabowski said at Monday’s board meeting the remaining $745,000 from the approximate $31 million PK-school project will be used for high school improvements and other needed renovations and repairs.
The board approved a contract with Duro-Last Roofing to be installed by Holko Enercon Roofing Solutions for replacing the aging high school roof.
He said $537,361 was left over from the OSFC project and with interest earned, the total remaining is approximately $745,000.
Grabowski said once the roof project is done, the remaining $140,000 will provide the district an opportunity to do what it needs to do at the high school. He said other needed projects — including roofing repair work, boiler upgrades, updating air conditioning and enhancing Wi-Fi — can be done and will be prioritized.
The new elementary and middle school complex opened in late summer 2018 and was made possible with a local 4.4-mill bond issue and funds from the OSFC’s classroom facilities assistance program.
The new school complex replaced the century-old Champion Central Elementary, north of state Routes 305 and 45, and Champion Middle School on Alva Avenue, which were both demolished.
Treasurer Laurena Rouan said the PK-8 school project came in under budget as construction costs at the time the bond issue was approved were low.
“The timing was ideal for the project. All the factors that needed to come into play on this project did, which helped us,” she said previously.
For the $31 million project, the local share was 44 percent covered by the 4.4-mill bond issue raising $13.8 million, and the OSFC covered 56 percent, paying $17.5 million.
In another matter, the board announced the seventh annual State of the Schools and Student Showcase “Creating 21st Century Citizens” will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in high school gymnasium.
Planned at the event are high school students FIRST robotics, middle school FIRST technology challenge and elementary virtual reality demonstrations.
In other business, the board:
• Approved the 2020-21 school calendar with first day for students Aug. 18, 2020 and last day May 20, 2021;
• Approved property insurance rates for 2020-21 at $57,500;
• Approved Matthew White as stage director for the school musical.
