State capital budget includes funds for Valley
Mahoning County would receive $13,178,601 from the state’s capital budget, with about $10.7 million going to Youngstown State University, while Trumbull would get $3,022,500 under the spending plan approved by the Ohio Senate.
Not including YSU, Mahoning would get $2,471,079 for 10 projects, while Trumbull would receive funding for 12 projects.
The Senate approved the capital budget 31-0 Wednesday. The state House still has to vote on the proposal.
The state’s capital budget, which is approved by the state Legislature every two years, totals $3.7 billion and includes $208 million for community projects, mostly related to arts and recreation.
State Sen. Al Cutrona, R-Canfield, said: “Providing support for local projects means an investment in our neighbors. I’m proud to return state resources back to everyday Ohioans in order to strengthen our communities. I know that each one of these projects will leave a lasting impact on the Valley and eastern Ohio.”
The capital budget includes a carveout for colleges and universities.
YSU is getting $10,707,522 for improvements at its main campus as well as $3.5 million for improvements to its Steubenville campus to get it ready to open in the fall.
The YSU funding for its main Youngstown campus includes:
• $3.3 million for roof replacements at several buildings, including Cushwa, Moser and Ward Beecher halls.
• $1.8 million for elevator safety upgrades and replacements.
• $1.17 million to expand and modernize its on-campus dental hygiene clinic.
• $1.17 million to renovate heavily-used general purpose classrooms and associated support space, including Cushwa Hall.
• $1 million for safety upgrades, including fire alarm systems and fire doors, including at Bliss and DeBartolo halls.
• $800,000 to renovate restrooms, including at Ward Beecher and Moser halls.
• $592,522 for information technology upgrades.
• $500,000 to improve campus gateways and core pedestrian areas.
• $375,000 to replace or upgrade aging building systems, including Beeghly Center and Stambaugh Auditorium.
TRUMBULL COUNTY
The 12 Trumbull County projects to be funded under the state Senate bill include:
• $650,000 for improvements to Niles parks.
• $450,000 for the Trumbull County Regional Fire Training Facility in Howland.
• $400,000 to expand the Akron Children’s Warren Health Center.
• $300,000 for the Waddell Park baseball fields in Niles.
• $250,000 for an infrastructure project at the Medici Museum of Art in Howland.
• $250,000 for Mahoning River water trails.
• $200,000 for improvements to the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.
• $150,000 for the Trumbull County Museum of Science Fiction & Fantasy Art in Warren.
• $125,000 for the Morningside Community Park development in Niles.
• $120,000 for improvements to Warren Historic Park.
• $100,000 for the restoration of the Belmont Park Cemetery in Liberty.
• $27,500 for the restoration of pickleball courts at Woodland Park in McDonald.
MAHONING COUNTY
The 10 Mahoning County projects to be funded under the Senate’s version of the capital budget include:
• $750,000 for the Youngstown Innovation Hub for Aerospace and Defense in downtown Youngstown.
• $350,000 for the Nebo Park Miracle League Project in Struthers.
• $250,000 for improvements to Coy Park in Green Township.
• $250,000 for upgrades to the Redgate Farm Community Park in Canfield Township.
• $200,000 for renovations to the Broadway Recovery Services Health Hub in Boardman.
• $200,000 to the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation for its food services program.
• $150,000 for improvements to the Stavich Trail in Struthers and Lowellville.
• $146,079 for upgrades to the Canfield Township Community Park.
• $100,000 for facility improvements to Clothed in Strength in Poland.
• $75,000 for Dylan’s House’s Struthers ranch.
