Victims in PIA accident identified
VIENNA — Township police has identified the two men injured in the accident Wednesday morning at the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics school at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport.
Zachary J. Norris, 20, 3083 Lee Lynn Court, Youngstown, is in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Norris was hit in the face by an airplane propeller as students were working on the engine.
A second victim, Cody W. Keller, 28, 520 Wildwood Ave., New Castle, Pa., received injuries to his hand. He was treated and released from the hospital, police said.
The students, who were working on an aircraft motor, were turning the propeller to move oil in the motor, according to Vienna police Chief Bob Ludt.
“The motor apparently fired up, starting up for a moment with the propeller striking one male in the head and the second in the hand,” Ludt wrote in a report. “Both were transported to St. Elizabeth (Youngstown) Hospital.”
PIA President and CEO Suzanne Markle said the school was kept closed Thursday in order for its own staff to review what happened in the school and measures that could be taken to ensure a similar accident does not happen again.
“PIA is committed to a safe learning environment for all students and staff,” Markle said.
Markle stated the school is extremely grateful for the rapid response by Trumbull County 911 and the emergency medical technicians who responded.
