Man accused of setting wig afire

Police say suspect also trashed his girlfriend’s apartment

WARREN — A Sharon man accused of wrecking an apartment and setting his girlfriend’s wig on fire over the weekend pleaded not guilty Monday in Warren Municipal Court.

Tyreek L. Barnett, 22, 417 S. Oakland Ave., is being held at the Trumbull County Jail on a $2,500 bond and is due back in court Oct. 9, court records show. He is facing charges of arson, criminal damaging and criminal trespass.

Barnett is accused of going to the 594 Commerce St. NW apartment of Consuelo M. Jenkins, 34, around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, where police said he trashed the living room, dining room and kitchen.

Responding to several calls from neighbors, police officers found the couches in the apartment were flipped over, a television had been shoved forward into the drywall, causing damage, glass was broken on the living room carpet and random knickknacks were thrown around the room, according to the police report.

Food from the apartment’s refrigerator was thrown across the dining room and kitchen areas. There were broken dishes on the floor and oil was poured over it, the police report states.

Because of an unusual burning smell, the Warren Fire Department was called to investigate. Fire officials found a woman’s wig that intentionally had been set on fire. It was melted and laying on the carpeted floor, the report states.

While police were at the home, Barnett arrived at the scene with Jenkins. He described living there with Jenkins, which she affirmed. However, police said she became visibly upset when she saw the apartment.

Barnett admitted getting into the apartment by prying open the back door. However, Barnett said he only charged his phone and left for a house party. Barnett claimed someone else must have come into the apartment after he left, the report states.

The apartment’s owner told police that after watching video surveillance of the exterior of the apartment, Barnett was the only person seen going in and out of it after Jenkins left and Barnett arrived. Several witnesses also told police Barnett caused the damage inside the apartment.

While at the Trumbull County Jail, police found that Barnett was on the no-trespass list at the Austin Village Apartments. Court records show Jenkins was granted a temporary protection order against Barnett.
