Charges filed in shooting of 9-year-old girl

Say'Quan Parks

WARREN – A 22-year-old man is arrested in a Sunday afternoon shooting, in which a stray bullet hit a 9-year-old city girl.

Appearing in Warren Municipal Court on Tuesday for a video arraignment, Say’Quan Parks, 22, of East Avenue SE, entered a not guilty plea before Judge Thomas Gysegem. He was arrested by Bazetta Township police, according to Trumbull County jail records.

Parks faces felonious assault, having weapons under disability, obstructing official business and carry concealed weapons.

Gysegem ordered that there would be no bond for the suspect who will be awaiting his next court hearing June 29 from inside the jail. His court records state he is “a public safety threat.”

The charges were filed just two days after police responded to the shooting, just after midnight Sunday morning, on the 800 block of Kenilworth Avenue SE. A stray bullet struck 9-year-old A’Kasha Taylor-Robinson as she slept on a couch.

A’Kasha was initially taken to the trauma center at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, and was later transported to Akron Children’s Hospital.

Her mother, Misti Taylor, said the bullet lodged into her daughter’s arm and shattered the bone. The girl underwent surgery in Akron on Sunday to repair the damaged arm and remove the bullet. Taylor said that a nine-inch pin was inserted into her daughter’s arm to hold the bone together and allow it to heal.

A’Kasha returned home as of Monday afternoon.
