Music club to host scholarship event

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP: Warren Music Club, a member of the Ohio and National Federation of Music Clubs, will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at the home of Karl and Jeannine Morris.

The annual scholarship dinner will be prepared by Karl Morris, Ruth Parker and Ben Olsen. Contributions for the dinner will be used for a club scholarship to a student at the Dana School of Music.

Anna Marie Beagle is chair of the sacred music program that is open to the public. The club choral ensemble will sing “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” arranged by John Helgen. Amanda Beagle will sing “Lord of the Dance,” a traditional Shaker melody, and Karen Hunt and Jeannine Morris will perform the piano duet “I Need Thee Every Hour.”

The Music in Poetry will be read from “A Year in Verse” published by NFMC. The attendees will sing “Brighten the Corner Where You Are,” the song of the month and the Federation benediction “The Gift of Song” by Lana Bailey accompanied by Elaine Maki.

KOVALIK FOR HUMAN RIGHTS: Human rights advocate Dan Kovalik is coming to Youngstown 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Calvin Center for the Arts, 755 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, as part of an Ohio tour promoting his books on Venezuela (“The Plot to Overthrow Venezuela: How the U.S. is Orchestrating a Coup for Oil”), Syria (“Syria: Anatomy of a Regime Change”) and Palestine (“The Case for Palestine: Why it Matters and Why You Should Care”).

Kovalik is the U.S. lawyer for the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and has filed the first lawsuit against the U.S. government for its extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean.

Kovalik has worked for the United Steelworkers of America (AFL-CIO) and was instrumental in exposing human rights violations by several multinational corporations in Colombia.
