9/11 remembrance events set around Mahoning Valley
The following events are planned to mark the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in Washington, D.C., and New York City:
• AUSTINTOWN — The 24th annual Mahoning Valley 9/11 Memorial ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Mahoning Valley 9/11 Memorial Park,1055 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown hosted by the Austintown Beautification Committee. Guest speaker is Austintown Local Schools Superintendent Timothy Kelty, a United States Army First Infantry division veteran who served in the 838th National Guard in Austintown. The ceremony also will feature musical selections by the Austintown Fitch High School band and concert choir, the Springfield High School choir, a 21-gun salute and emergency vehicle display.
• VIENNA — A memorial ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at the 9/11 memorial at the front of the Vienna Fire Department, 833 Youngstown Kingsville Road. There will be a program and placement of a wreath at the memorial.
• YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University will host a 9/11 Remembrance Walk that will begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Veterans Plaza near Beeghly Center and end there as well. At noon, a remembrance ceremony will take place in the atrium of WIlliamson Hall hosted by the Department of Criminal Justice. At 4:30 p.m., a documentary showing and discussion will take place in the auditorium of the McDonough Museum of Art on Wick Avenue.
