Boardman Movies 8 owners predict theater will close

The owners of a Boardman movie theater are warning patrons of its impending closure.

“We don’t know how much longer we are going to be able to keep the doors open at Movies 8,” Paige DeCiancio said Tuesday on social media. “Nothing is set in stone. There are no dates. This video is just to give you guys a warning so nothing comes as a major shock.”

The DeCiancio family has operated the discounted-price movie house since June 2014. It also runs Skyway Twin Drive-In Theatre on North Leavitt Road NW, Warren. A third DeCiancio movie theater, Encore Cinema in Niles, closed in 2022 as a result of the pandemic.

“We made it through COVID,” DeCiancio said of the Boardman location. “It has been a struggle every day since to stay open. I’m so grateful that we did make it through and that we have continued to be your affordable movie option.”

Movies 8 features previously run movies at $4 per person and recently started to feature Disney movie classics.

DeCiancio said in her post that ownership has worked to limit price increases.

“It’s expensive and it’s tough out there,” she said. “We were so grateful to be able to be a cheap option for you guys. We’ve done everything that we can to keep the doors open. At this point, it just isn’t enough anymore.”

One online commenter, who identified himself as Jon Price, said he was saddened over the announcement.

“Streaming movies at home has destroyed the theater,” he wrote. “Nobody wants to get up and go see a movie because it goes to their home.”

Another commenter, David Schoennenbrenner, said he appreciated Movie 8’s selections.

“Thanks for all you do and have done,” he posted.

Movies 8 also supports independent filmmakers, who have enlisted the facility to air their works.

“(We) gotta do something to save the only theater that has supported us as (indie) filmmakers making it possible for us to throw Red Carpet Events so that our local fans, family, friends and supporters can come out and enjoy our locally made movies,” Kwai Daniels wrote Wednesday on social media.

DeCiancio and her father, Brian, said they are not seeking handouts or organizing a fundraiser. However, she said there is a way to help.

“Come to the movies.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
