Tony-winning play ‘Stereophonic’ opens in Cleveland
Most of the Broadway productions that embark on national tours are musicals.
“Stereophonic,” which starts a three-week run on Tuesday at Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace as part of the KeyBank Broadway Series, is a play, but it’s also the rare play to earn Tony nominations for best original score and best orchestrations.
“Stereophonic” mines the agony and the ecstasy of creation as it zooms in on a music studio in 1976. Here, an up-and-coming rock band recording a new album finds itself suddenly on the cusp of superstardom. The ensuing pressures could spark their breakup — or their breakthrough.
Written by David Adjmi, directed by Daniel Aukin and featuring original music by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, “Stereophonic” gives the audience a fly-on-the-wall view of the powder keg process of a band on the brink of blowing up.
The show ran for 205 performances on Broadway and became the most Tony-nominated play in history, receiving 13 Award nominations in 2024. It won more Tonys than any show that year, picking up statues for best play, best direction of a play, best scenic design, best sound design and best featured actor.
“Stereophonic” runs through Jan. 25 at the Connor Palace, Playhouse Square, 1519 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range from $34.80 to $135 and are available online at. playhousesquare.org and by calling 216-241-6000.
