Forney keeps finding drama, comedy in Horton family
The Horton family continues to inspire Youngstown writer-director Michael Anthony Forney.
“Should I Get Married?,” the fifth play written by Forney about the family and the second one this year, will premiere Saturday at Ford Family Recital Hall.
“This is the new family that everyone is talking about, or is going to be talking about,” Forney said.
“Should I Get Married?” picks up right where “The Family Reunion Part Two” left off, following Brian “Bebop” Jones’ proposal to Brittany.
“They’re still dealing with secret issues and skeletons within the family, but (the proposal) kind of lightened up the mood,” Forney said. “Bebop’s an international basketball star. He has big money. He’s very charming. He’s a ladies man. And everyone’s happy for Brittany, but what they don’t know is, basically, he had a past relationship with one of the family members. They’re planning a big wedding, and the family doesn’t know that him and someone within the family had romantic history.”
The questions asked by audience members after the premiere of “The Family Reunion” last November inspired Forney to write a sequel, “The Family Reunion Part Two,” which was staged in June. He didn’t need audience reaction to know there was another story left to tell.
“I didn’t plan on it, but when we were doing it, I was like, ‘Oh, wait a minute, Bebop comes in, he proposes, this is the end of the reunion, but this is the beginning of another situation.’ So we knew way ahead of time that there was going to be a ‘Should I Get Married?” That’s why we left everyone on a cliffhanger.”
The cast features Christian Dion-Welch, Ensley C. Thomas, Charles Wilder, Seia Glover, Jaylene Lewis, Ram Torres-Ramirez, Shaneika Moton, Wayne “Spank” Bonner Jr., Michael Jerome Taylor Jr., LaTasha Dendy, Anyaa Vance, Rosetta Perry, Reia Frost and Michelle Di Lauro.
Forney credited those actors with the ongoing success of the Horton saga.
“I can see the emotion in my mind. I can feel it in my heart, but in my history of producing anything, sometimes it doesn’t come off the way you see it. I’ve been blessed in this situation where I have the same consistent casting, and they have successfully embraced and created the personalities, the moods, the demeanors of every character that is within the franchise.”
Forney expects the Horton family to live on. Forney’s productions at Ford Family Recital Hall have been recorded and broadcast on his streaming platform, Forney Extreme TV, and he’s in search of a bigger platform for his work.
“There is an audience that is following the Horton family. They’re following me. The vision is to connect with representatives within Paramount or Sony Pictures in Atlanta and LA and create a production deal, or see if they want to potentially buy the rights, because this is the original story. There’s nothing like it.”
