Wed. 10:20 a.m.: Jury declines death penalty for Hamad

WARREN - A jury recommended Nasser Hamad be sentenced to life in prison with a chance at being paroled in 30 years. Hamad, 48, was convicted of killing two people and wounding three others during a Feb. 25 shooting outside his home on state Route 46 in Howland. Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Ronald Rice will impose a sentence 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The same jury that convicted the Howland man last week started its second day in deliberations before 9 a.m. today.

WARREN - The jury in the trial of Nasser Hamad - the Howland man convicted of killing two people and wounding three others - have continued deliberating through the lunch break this afternoon. The jury, which began their talks shortly after 10 a.m. today, could recommend life imprisonment, with or without the opportunity of parole, or the death penalty. Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Ronald J. Rice, who will have the final decision on Hamad's fate, ordered the six women and six men to continue their deliberations as lunch was being brought into the jury room from a downtown ...

4:25 p.m. Sunday: Vigil to be held for slain police officer

GIRARD -- A vigil is scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight at the Girard High School Arrowhead Stadium for slain Girard police officer Justin Leo, 31. Attendees are asked to bring a candle. Leo, a five-year veteran of the department, was shot around 10:15 p.m. Saturday at 408 Indiana Ave. while responding to a domestic violence call, according to investigators. He died just before midnight during surgery at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
