Joseph J. Mango 1923-2017

NILES — Joseph J. Mango, 94, died Monday, July 10, 2017 at Northside Medical Center. He was born March 19, 1923, in Niles, the son of Thomas J. and Nellie Youll Mango. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles. Joseph worked as a heavy equipment operator out of Operating Engineers Hall Local 66. He is survived by a son, Thomas J. Mango of Fort Myers, Fla.; a daughter, Victoria Lee Mango of Niles; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Camarata Mango; and a brother. Nancy M. Shales 1950-2017

NILES — Nancy M. Shales, 66, of Niles, died Friday, July 14, 2017, following a battle with cancer. Nancy was born Sept. 5, 1950, in Youngstown, a daughter of Herman L. and Bertha Mae Evans Miller. Nancy worked at Packard Electric and attended First Baptist Church of Niles. Survivors include her husband, Martin N. Shales, whom she married May 8, 1999; her children, Kelley Tomsich of Struthers, Jeff (Tracy) Rowland of Niles and Martin R. (Michella) Shales of Hubbard; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Fiscal recovery plan approved

NILES — City council on Monday approved an amended fiscal recovery plan presented last week by Mayor Thomas Scarnecchia that the service director said is comprehensive and has the legs to carry the city out of fiscal emergency. Council had to approve the plan before it is presented to the Niles Financial Planning and Supervision Commission July 27. The plan calls for $135,000 a year for a street resurfacing program — instead of $140,000 this year and $120,000 in the coming years. WARREN — The two judges charged with overseeing the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District have a few questions and would like some answers before they put their stamp of approval on an MVSD resolution to refund some $5 million to the cities of Youngstown and Niles and the village of McDonald. Book giveaway feeds the brain

NILES — Since 2012, retired librarian Ellen Finan of Cortland and other volunteers have worked to get new books to local children in Niles and Warren as part of the Food for the Brain Campaign. This month, more than 200 books were handed out to children at Niles Royal Mall as Finan and others spent an hour providing a variety of books. Each child could select one book. Each summer, the group travels to the Warren Family Mission, Highland Terrace, Warren Heights and Packard Park in Warren and Royal Mall in Niles to hand out books to children in need up to age 18.
