Group does mission work in Ky.

NILES — Teens and adults from First Christian Church of Niles spent part of the summer doing mission work in Covington, Ky., an effort that was organized by Group Mission Teams. Stacy Gaugler, leader of the church’s Christian Youth Fellowship, said six people, including herself, Don Trunick, and teens, Hayden Miller, Rea Gaugler, Alexis Gaugler and Kyra Franklin, spent a week on their mission work. Collections will make a difference Oct. 28

NILES — Every year for nearly a decade, Niles Community Services has held a community-wide food drive as its Make A Difference Day project. And every year, the community responds generously to the cause, said director Jean Williams. MVSD to keep consulting firm during transition

MINERAL RIDGE — A consulting firm will stay on at the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District during the transition to a new chief engineer, who begins Oct. 1, according to a member of the board overseeing the water treatment plant. “We don’t want to pull the plug on MS Consultants just yet, we want to have some overlap with the new engineer. Niles fire chief warns of scam

NILES — Residents have been receiving calls from someone claiming to be from the Niles Fire Department, asking for money in exchange for smoke detectors. But it’s a scam, said fire Chief David Danielson. The department is not selling detectors and does not have any ongoing fundraisers, Danielson said. The calls should be ignored, Danielson said.

Reunion set for Class of 1955

NILES — The Niles McKinley High School Class of 1955 will hold its 62nd reunion 2 p.m. Sept. 23 at Leo’s Ristorante in Howland.
