Remembering POWs with annual display

NILES — Prisoners of war and military members still missing were remembered with an annual 24-hour display set up by local veterans at Circle Park in Niles. Bill Weiser of Negley, one of the event organizers, said the POW / MIA Recognition Day remembers those who never came home and those who are still missing. McDonald decision to close basketball courts now final

McDONALD — The Woodland Park basketball courts will remain closed for the rest of the year and Village Council gave final reading Sept. 20 on legislation allowing the mayor and village administrator to set and regulate the days and hours when the courts and other parts of the park will be open for use. The legislation passed by a vote of 4-0. Council members Mike O’Brien and Brian Fisher were absent. Weathersfield BOE approves contract

WEATHERSFIELD — The Weathersfield Board of Education has approved a new five-year contract for treasurer Steve Haynie, effective for the 2018-19 school year. Haynie, who has been treasurer for the past two years, is now paid $53,000. He will receive $55,000 the first and second years, $56,000 the third and fourth years and $57,00 the fifth year, the contract states. The board also approved an increase in pay for three administrative secretaries in the board, treasurer’s, and superintendent’s offices at $17.44 per hour for 2017-18 and $17.61 per hour for 2018-19.

McKinley Memorial ready for centennial

NILES — The National McKinley Birthplace Memorial will hold a centennial re-dedication and time capsule opening Oct. 14. The event will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the memrorial, 40 N. Main St., Niles. There will be free tours of the National McKinley Birthplace Museum in the auditorium wing of the building. This museum is the first presidential museum. At noon, there will be a recreation of the dedication of the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial, which originally was dedicated on Oct. 5, 1917. McKinley Memorial Library book sale set

NILES — The Friends of the McKinley Memorial Library will hold their annual book sale Oct. 5-8 in the McKinley Auditorium. A preview sale for Friends members will be 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 4. The sale will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 5 and 6, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 7 and 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 8. There will be hardcover and paperback books, audiobooks, movies and music for sale.

Friends remember Parise; ex-mayor died Sept. 3

NILES — The city lost a legend with the Sept. 3 death of a former mayor of Niles who stayed active in the city decades after his term ended. Joseph Parise, 87, served one term as an independent before he was voted out in 1991, but he never faded to the sidelines, said Niles City Councilman Stephen Papalas, D at-large. Instead, Parise influenced the leadership styles of others, including himself, Papalas said. Papalas, who has been on city council for more than 35 years, said Parise had a “tough leadership” style and always stuck to his convictions. “He came from a business ...
