Former Warren G. Harding Raider Chaz Coleman is no longer with the Tennessee football program.
According to multiple national media outlets, including ESPN and CBS Sports, Coleman was medically dismissed from the Volunteers on Friday. CBS Sports reported that Tennessee will honor his scholarship despite being away from the program.
Coleman participated in spring practices for two weeks, according to the ESPN report. But he did not appear for the team’s summer workouts. In that same report, Volunteers head coach Josh Huepel said that Coleman’s absence was due to “personal reasons.”
Coleman transferred to Tennessee after one year at Penn State, where he gained early praise from veteran defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. The nod from Knowles led to some early playing time.
In nine games as a freshman linebacker with the Nittany Lions, he had eight tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, three quarterback hurries, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one pass breakup.
In January, after also receiving an offer from Ohio State, Coleman chose to play the 2026 season with the Volunteers. ESPN ranked him 13th among players in the transfer portal.
He had a decorated high school career, which eventually included earning a ranking in ESPN’s top 300 football prospects in the 2025 recruiting class.
Coleman was a multi-sport standout for Warren G. Harding on both sides of the ball. He earned first team All-Ohio honors at linebacker.
During his senior season, he was an edge rusher and the starting quarterback. He helped lead the Raiders to an 8-4 record and an appearance in the second round of the Division II tournament.
For his efforts, he was named the Trumbull County Player of the Year.
