Six Valley stars named District Player of the Year

The All-Inland District boys and girls basketball teams were released on Monday by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association. The group consists of newspapers throughout the district.
The Mahoning Valley had four boys and two girls named the player of the year in their respective districts, and four coaches received honors.
Ursuline boys’ Jaylen Gunther was the Player of the Year in Division III. LaBrae boys’ Austin Rowe and Ravenna Southeast’s Cohen Richardson were the Players of the Year in Division V, Mineral Ridge’s Chase Moore and Smithville’s Brennan Piatt were also the Players of the Year in the boys’ D-VI listing and Heartland Christian’s Collin Kalaher split the Players of the Year honor with Medina Christian’s R.J. Walgate in D-VII.
On the girls teams, Crestview’s Addison Rhodes was the Player of the Year in Division V for the second straight season, and Warren JFK’s Didi Ryan got Player of the Year in D-VII.
Warren JFK girls’ Marc Morgan (D-VII), McDonald boys’ James Franceschelli (D-VII) and West Branch girls’ Walt DeShields (D-IV) all won Coach of the Year honors outright. Canfield boys’ Andy Vlajkovich and Norton’s B.J. Sanderson were the Coaches of the Year in D-IV.
BOYS
In Division II, Austintown Fitch’s EJ Giles was a first-teamer. Warren G. Harding’s Myles Miller was on the second team, and fellow Raider Xavier Clark, Fitch’s Brady Evans and Boardman’s Jerry Smith and Jayse Varley all got honorable mention.
In Division III, Gunther and teammate Noah Bell both got first-team honors, along with Chaney’s Austin Brown. Chaney’s Allen Hill was the lone area representative on the second team. The Cowboys’ Asuante Mickel and a Howland trio of Luca Naples, Demetri Gentis and Carter Saul all got honorable mention.
For Division IV, West Branch’s Jeremiah Thomas, Canfield’s Jace Riccardo and Hubbard’s Braydon Songer were put on the first team. Hubbard, Canfield and West Branch also had second-teamers as Jakob Hayes, Bryce Roberts and Gavin Gregory all represented their teams, respectively. Canfield’s Joey Gabriel and Landon Shina, West Branch’s Grady Hirst and Salem’s Deontay Steele received honorable mention.
Division V saw four first-team honorees. In addition to Rowe, Girard’s Braxton Sloan, Lakeview’s Isaiah Lantz and Poland’s Carmine Tukalo each were named to the top team. LaBrae’s Angelo Melidona and Garrettsville Garfield’s Devin Bates were second-teamers. And Cardinal Mooney’s Kingston Powell, Dante Turner and Ford Stacy, Garfield’s Collin McGranahan and Oliver Walker, LaBrae’s Lucas Glaser and Jaxson Lancaster and Poland’s Nick Nittoli each received honorable mention.
Division VI had Newton Falls’ Phil Davis and Columbiana’s Cooper Brown join Moore on the first team. Valley Christian’s Deion Miller, Springfield’s Isaac Dyer and Brookfield’s Blake Hammond landed on the second team. The honorable mention recipients were Newton Falls’ Dallas Dunlap and Drayson Moore, Mineral Ridge’s Landon Bingham, Springfield’s Matt Wymer, Campbell’s Jawaun Johnson and DJ Lambert, Warren JFK’s Henry Phillips, Columbiana’s Senator Johnson and East Palestine’s Drew Bycroft.
Finally, in Division VII, Western Reserve’s Connor Cochran and McDonald’s Joey Cappuzzello joined Kalaher on the first team. Heartland Christian’s Brody Conaway, Badger’s Tyler McWilliams, McDonald’s Drew Zajack and Windham’s Matt Kolaczek made the second team. Badger’s Jack Harnett and Alton Winchek, McDonald’s Casey Miller and Brenden Emerick, Leetonia’s Ethan Mathia, Lordstown’s Alton Winchek and Heartland Christian’s Isaiah Matthews made honorable mention.
GIRLS
Division II only had two Fitch girls. Kylie Folkwein made the second team, and Amiya Harris got honorable mention.
Canfield’s Jenna Triveri and Chaney’s Alyssa Brown both were first-teamers in Division III. The second team featured Canfield’s Carly Fleming and Howland’s Maya Kubancsek, and Canfield’s Sofia Castronova, Boardman’s Jocelynn Torres and Maddy Slevin, Ursuline’s Kennedy Carpenter and Maizy Green, East’s Jackie Bunn and Chaney’s Simone Lewis each got honorable mention.
In Division IV, West Branch’s Madi Hoopes, Salem’s Abby Knickerbocker and Hubbard Chloe Cicero each got on the first team. West Branch’s Audrey Eaton and Lakeview’s Kalyssa Werner both landed on the second team, and West Branch’s Tallie Muniz and Alli Kanagy and Salem’s Karlie Sampson were honorable mention recipients.
In addition to Rhodes, Girard’s Caylee Wilkes and Garfield’s Mandy Cardinal both got on the first team. Poland’s Briella Rowe and LaBrae Riley Rowe got on the second team, and Columbiana’s Annah Clemmer and Evy Rapp, Crestview’s Ava Bucey, Brianna Baker and Karli Perry, LaBrae’s Angel Scruggs and Ella Kuszmaul, Poland’s Brooklyn Kosco, Girard’s Ally Gassman and South Range’s Gwen Lowry go honorable mention.
For Division VI, Mineral Ridge’s Sullivan Sandy got first team and Gianna Gilbert was second team. The honorable mentions consisted of Valley Christian’s NaAriyah Graham, McDonald’s Juliana Krumpak and Cierra Shiley, East Palestine’s Jacklyn Ogle and Newton Falls’ Madison Davis.
Division VII had four land on the first team with Warren JFK’s Ryan and Gianna Pompelia, Maplewood’s Morgan Himes and Western Reserve’s Quincy Miller getting top honors. The entire second team featured local girls, with Western Reserve’s Kylee Ramsey, Jackson-Milton’s Amani Yasin, Badger’s Riley Thomas, Bristol’s Lauren Church and Chalker’s Abby Grimm making the cut. Lowellville’s Gianna Palumbo and Sydney Procick, Chalker’s Tatum Hudak, Maplewood’s Claire Urchek, Jackson-Milton’s Emma Johns and Heartland Christian’s Sarah Reynolds all got honorable mention.
