YSU men dominate Purdue Fort Wayne for 3rd win in last four games

The Youngstown State men’s basketball team put together one of its most complete performances since it began Horizon League play on Wednesday night.

The Penguins were an efficient, well-oiled machine, as five players scored in double figures in a 90-61 road victory over Purdue Fort Wayne.

YSU built a 16-point lead at halftime and just built on that in the second half. The Penguins finished by shooting 66% from the field overall, while knocking down 16 3-pointers at a 57% clip.

Bryson Dawkins had his second straight game with 18 points to lead the Penguins.

Rich Rolf and Tae Blackshear combined to hit nine 3-pointers, as Blackshear built off his breakout performance against IU Indy last week. He finished with 14 points, while Rolf had 15.

YSU’s leading scorer Cris Carroll was quiet in the first half, but scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half.

Starting in place of injured freshman Jaiden Haynes, Cam Polak was the final Penguin in double figures with 10 points.

Corey Hadnot II had 17 points to pace the Mastodons, which fell to 14-10 overall and 8-5 in Horizon League play.

After losing seven straight games in league play to slip near the bottom of the conference standings, YSU has begun to show some signs of life, having won three of its last four games.

The Penguins still have a lot of work to do over the final month of the regular season, but are now back to .500 overall at 12-12 and are 5-8 in the Horizon League.

YSU returns home Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. tip against Robert Morris.

Starting at $3.23/week.
