BELOIT — With the game on the line, Lorieona Jannone stepped to the charity stripe with 0.6 seconds remaining in overtime.

She converted both attempts to give the Canfield girls basketball team a 42-40 overtime victory over West Branch on Wednesday night in Beloit.

It was a bit of fate for Jannone, who missed some late free throws in the Cardinals’ win over Howland on Saturday.

“I had big free throws at the end of (the last) game and I ended up missing them,” Jannone said. “Feels good to finally get redemption on those and show my team I can put them in.”

The win pushed Canfield’s winning streak to double digits, with the Cardinals (19-2) winning their last 10. It also snapped the Warriors’ three-game win streak.

Through the first 4:10 the scoreboard looked more like it belonged in a baseball game. The Warriors held a 2-1 lead as neither team had early success offensively.

Audrey Eaton split a pair of free throws to give the Warriors (16-3) a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The scoring began to open up for the Cardinals. They went on a 9-0 run to go up 17-11 around the four-minute mark of the second quarter.

That created enough breathing room for Canfield to take a 20-13 lead into halftime.

“I think we turned it over seven or eight times in the first quarter and didn’t give ourselves much of a chance to score,” Canfield head coach Matt Reel said. “Then in the second quarter, we only turned it over once. Gave us a chance to make some shots, and we got a few in transition to get us going.”

Then it was West Branch’s turn to sink some shots.

Madi Hoopes tied the game at 24 with a three inside of the final minute of the third quarter. But Ceci Muckelroy gave Canfield a 25-24 advantage after splitting a pair of free throws with 1.4 seconds to play in the third.

The lead changed hands four times in the fourth quarter, and a Canfield 3-pointer tied the game. But Alli Kanagy’s jumper gave the Warriors a 36-34 lead with 2:19 to play.

On its next two possessions, Canfield missed two layups that could have tied the game. However, the third try was the charm, as Sofia Castronova scooped one in to knot the game up at 36 with 38.9 ticks left.

With 10.3 seconds remaining and West Branch having the ball coming out of a timeout, Eaton’s shot was off target, leading to overtime.

There were 48.8 seconds to play and the score was tied at 38. Carly Fleming went to the free-throw line and knocked down the pair to give Canfield a 40-38 lead.

But once again, the Warriors tied it. Hoopes came away with a steal in the middle of the paint and scored the game-tying layup.

“(Hoopes) is young. Got a lot to learn, a very talented player, is only gonna get better,” West Branch head coach Walt DeShields said of his freshman. “She’s a hard worker. Each year, it’s gonna be fun to watch her get better and play and grow as a player and as a person.”

Then Eaton got fouled with 8.1 seconds remaining with a chance to clinch the win for West Branch, but she missed both free throws.

Canfield got the ball with 7.7 seconds left on the clock. Jannone went from one end of the court to the other, getting fouled to set up her game-winning free throws.

“We knew both teams are really good and it’d probably come down to one play. They made one more play than us,” DeShields said. “We’ll come back from it though. Our girls will come ready to go tomorrow and try to get ready for the next game. We thought we had them there … a couple of times.”

Hoopes led all scorers with 18 points. Eaton tallied 10 points, and Tallie Muniz and Hallie Vie Burton both scored five.

Jenna Triveri led Canfield with 14 points. Castronova and Fleming each had eight points, and Jannone finished with five. But the Canfield point guard had the two biggest points of the game.

“Walt and I were talking, and we’re a little biased, but these are two of the most successful programs of the last few decades,” Reel said. “Anytime we get together at the end of the year, we know it’s going to prepare us for tournament play.

“It was a great girls basketball game, and there were so many ebbs and flows of that game. Nobody could really get ahead and really pull away from the other. I thought that was due to the way both teams played defense. They played outstanding tonight, and we just made a few plays at the end.”
