Area fighters to square off in Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN — A 15-bout, all-amateur fight card is set for Feb. 28 at St. Mary Byzantine Hall, 356 S. Belle Vista Avenue in Youngstown.
Presented by Lights Out Management and Springfield High School baseball, in conjunction with Golden String Boxing, the show will feature John Davis of Youngstown’s Golden String Boxing as he goes up against Gabriel Merced of Newark, New Jersey in the 150-pound main event.
The co-main has Francis Bonner of Akron taking on Tymon McCall-Daniels, also of Newark, in a 140-pound pairing.
Three area gyms will be represented with Davis and Isaac Johnson (155 pounds) hailing from host Golden String B.C., Jaylen Moore (80 pounds) and Mi’Kell Robinson (100 pounds), members of Youngstown’s Bulldog Boxing Club, and former middleweight champion of the world, Kelly Pavlik’s Ghost Boxing Club sending Angelo Martino (60 pounds), Levi Collins (65 pounds) and Diamond Chislom (140 pounds) to the bell.
Boxers from Akron, Cambridge, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Tallmadge, Toledo, Buffalo, New York, and Newark, New Jersey are also on the card.
“Area gyms are well-represented as we try our best to keep the bouts as evenly matched as possible,” Tom Cordell, Golden String trainer and local promoter, said. “Each bout is highly competitive with every fighter just chomping at the bit and ready to get going.”
Johnson will meet Caleb Rivera of Buffalo while Bulldog’s Robinson and Moore will go up against Kase Worley and Devonn Mickler, respectively, both of whom hail from Cleveland Heights.
Pavlik-trained boxers include Martino taking on Semaj Williams of Cleveland, Collins matching up against Abel Burt of Cambridge and Chislom readying for the punches delivered from Josiah Abdul Hamid of Newark.
Leading off the evening will be Benjamin Cadena, Jr. of Tallmadge, who will take on Messiah Roberts of Cleveland Heights in a 65-pound pairing while Donte Moore (180 pounds) and Isaiah Canty (125 pounds), both from Toledo, squaring off against Chad Toussaint of Cincinnati and Jhasi Mtume of Newark, respectively.
Josiah Gaitan of Cleveland will meet Oscar Ramirez of Toledo in a 165-pound scrap while Ramiro Hernandez, also of Cleveland, is set to go up against Logan Barona of Newark at 106 pounds.
Rounding out the card, Anthony Garcia Ornelas of Toledo takes on Gavin Zavala of Cambridge in a 145-pound clash while a 125 pound pairing features Akron’s Izaiah Jones going glove to glove with Al-Zahir Canty of Newark.
Years ago, Lights Out Management came up with the idea to aid other organizations through their shows and to date, they have supported those causes by distributing over $100,000 to those groups and organizations.
“We will have a 10-count prior to the fights, in memory of Steve Stanec, Bobby Clemens and Emilio Sebastiani, longtime supporters of area boxers,” Mike Cefalde of Lights Out Management said. “A special thanks also to Father John Joseph Welch for bringing back boxing to St. Mary’s.”
General Admission is $20, $30 for VIP chairs with tables of eight available for $400. All proceeds will go to benefit the Springfield baseball program.
Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first fight set to hit the bell at 7 p.m.
