Mooney’s run ends vs. Tigers in shootout
RAVENNA — Eighty minutes wasn’t enough for Cardinal Mooney and Chagrin Falls, finishing regulation tied. Another 30 minutes wasn’t enough either.
When the dust settled, it was the Tigers left standing, winning 5-4, in the sixth round of penalty kicks.
“Unfortunately, in any game there’s a winner and a loser, but I told the boys that we could be more proud of the effort they put in,” Cardinals coach Matthew Britton said. “We said before the game, ‘You’ve just got to leave everything on the line, leave it on the field’ and they did that. Congratulations to them. That’s a very good Chagrin Falls team. I wish them all the best going forward.”
Owen Edwards got Chagrin Falls on the board quickly, scoring just under three minutes into the game.
Mooney senior Dimitri Zoumis helped match the Tigers, scoring near the midway point of the first half. Then Edwards scored his second of the night to put the Tigers up 2-1 in the final minutes of the first half.
But Mooney had a response after the break. Near the midway point of the half once again, Cardinals senior Jacob Gugliotta kicked toward the net and bounced off the back of Eric Nemunaitis and in.
The Cardinals seemed to have an answer for nearly everything Chagrin Falls sent their way. Deep postseason runs have become routine for Mooney, so they know how to handle adversity.
“That’s why we play such a competitive schedule, tough schedule, because then that makes you battle-tested,” Britton said. “We face adversity early, so the first time we face adversity isn’t in a regional semifinal. We’ve seen it before, so that prepares us for these moments.”
Mooney finishes the year with a 14-4-1 record.
“Especially for the seniors, I just want them to remember all they accomplished over these last four years,” Britton said. “It’s been a phenomenal ride with them. I’ve watched them grow from boys to young men, and I couldn’t be more proud of the transformation I’ve seen in all of them. To the senior group, yes, I’m going to miss them terribly. I wish them all the best. The team’s going to miss them, but the team, I think it’ll just remember that fight that they’ve shown throughout, and that’s what we hope to carry forward.”
Mooney graduates eight seniors, including leading scorers Zoumis, Gugliotta, Mihali Frangos, and goalkeeper Noah Trewella.
For the returners, Britton said they’re only going up from here.
“We have a good group of kids returning, and then we’re hoping to bring in a talented group of freshmen,” Britton said. “What do they say? It’s not rebuilding, it’s reloading. We just hope to reload for next year.”
The Tigers will take on Bay High School in the Division IV, Region 15 finals on Sunday in Streetsboro.
