Harding-Ursuline football game canceled
The ongoing legal-related issues at Ursuline High School have claimed another game on the Fighting Irish’s football schedule.
On Wednesday, the Fighting Irish’s game against Warren G. Harding was canceled.
The game was supposed to be played at Stambaugh Stadium on Sept. 19, but a second lawsuit was filed against Ursuline High School on Wednesday.
The Warren City School District issued a press release on Wednesday afternoon.
“In light of the recent allegations against the Ursuline Football Program and a second Federal lawsuit filed today, the Warren G. Harding Raiders, respectfully, will not be playing Ursuline in Game 5 scheduled for September 19,” the press release said.
“The decision was made with careful consideration and the district is confident it is in the best interest of our Warren G. Harding students and our community.”
Ursuline was already being sued in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio over potential hazing and sexual assault, which allegedly occurred during the football team’s trip to a series of southern college football camps this summer.
The latest lawsuit alleges that Ursuline failed to protect a female student from a football player’s “alleged sexual harassment, stalking and violent assault.”
The second case was filed as a federal Title IX civil-rights lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.
Ursuline High School assistant principal Margaret Damore, athletic director John DeSantis, the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, the football player — who is listed as “Player 6” in the lawsuit — and his parents were named in the second case. Ursuline, Damore and the diocese were also named in the first lawsuit.
The suit said the incidents began in June 2023.
According to The Chandra Law Firm — the same firm that is handling the alleged hazing and sexual assault case — during the final day of summer gym, the player “violently dropped her on the ground twice, and dragged her across rough turf for 30 feet.” The incident left turf burn on the female student’s back, which was photographed by another student.
When Damore and DeSantis were made aware via the female student’s mother, they failed to contact Mahoning County Children’s Services or law enforcement, the lawsuit states.
According to The Chandra Law Firm, the player and the female student were in the same class the following fall, and the alleged harassment continued, “with Player-6 stalking and menacingly ogling” the female student.
Warren Harding head coach Matt Richardson could not say if the Raiders will find a replacement opponent to fill the void left in their schedule.
Ursuline canceled its Week 3 game against Farrell (Pa.) following the announcement of the first lawsuit. The team never had an opponent on the schedule for this Friday, meaning they were only set to play nine games at the start of the season.
With the Harding-Ursuline game canceled, the Fighting Irish only have seven official games still on their schedule. The Ohio High School Athletic Association requires a team to have competed in eight contests to be eligible for the playoffs.
