District girls soccer semis begin tonight
Three Trumbull County girls soccer teams get district tournament week started today when they play in district semifinals. It’s the start of a two-game drive to the regional (Sweet 16) level of postseason play in Ohio for teams that survived the first week of tournament play.
Two teams in action today — Champion and Lordstown — are No. 1 seeds in their respective Division III district tournaments. The Golden Flashes beat Bristol in a sectional bracket final of the Warren District, while Lordstown had a 4-1 victory over Columbiana in the Niles District.
Champion entertains fourth-seeded Berkshire tonight and Lordstown plays at home against South Range, the No. 4 seed in the Niles District.
The other Trumbull County team playing today, John F. Kennedy, is the No. 3 seed in the Warren District. The Eagles beat Badger, 3-1, in sectional play. They visit second-seeded Grand Valley tonight. The Mustangs defeated LaBrae, 3-0, in their sectional bracket final.
In Division II, sixth-seeded Cardinal Mooney faces No. 7 Salem at Youngstown State after both posted upsets in the sectional bracket final round. Salem beat No. 2 Lakeview, 2-1 in overtime, and Mooney slipped past No. 3 Howland, 2-1 in the second overtime.
District championship games for girls soccer are scheduled to be played on Thursday.
Champion is a fixture in Division III district title games. The last time the Golden Flashes did not reach a district final was 2012. Champion has won three district titles in that stretch. Last year, the Flashes lost in a shootout to Rootstown, a matchup that occurred in four of the last five district title games.
Kennedy lost to that same Rootstown team last season, 2-0 in the district semifinal round. Lordstown also was eliminated in the district semifinals last year in a 5-1 loss to Springfield.
Area boys soccer teams play their district semifinals on Tuesday, with their championship games on Saturday. Volleyball district tournaments play their semifinal games Wednesday and their title matches on Saturday.
