Orchids & onions

ORCHID: To Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost for leading his annual Capital Crimes Executive Summary report last week with the horrid and brutal assault and murder of 12-year-old Raymond Fife of Warren nearly 41 years ago. He aptly did so to illustrate the ineffectiveness of the state’s death penalty, to which killer Danny Lee Hill was sentenced 40 years ago last month. Gov. Mike DeWine recently pushed back Hill’s execution date — again — from this July to sometime in 2029. Yost, along with Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins and Miriam Fife, mother of Raymond, have long ...

Sound off!

If 8 million people protesting “No Kings” thought it was going to overthrow our government, they should think again. They crowned Obama when he was in office too and said, “No Kings.” We ignored them and are ignoring you now! To get people over 100 years old to protest, that must have been the most exercise they have gotten in years. Shame on these organizers on social media! — Niles The never-ending saga of Danny Lee Hill rears its ugly head again! The ongoing farce of appeal after appeal is ludicrous. He has been found guilty time and again, and appeal after appeal has ...

Faith among young people surges

PITTSBURGH — Last September, Pastor Jason Howard of the Sanctuary Church in Pittsburgh saw a surge of young people flocking to his Christian congregation, the week after Charlie Kirk was murdered. Howard knew that something had shifted. Yes, their congregation had always been predominantly youth-driven, but this was different. Lines began to form for their services. Public transportation was dropping off children by the busload from campuses across the city, and he knew that he had an obligation to expand. Howard teamed up with local college students at the University of ...

Turn old TMH building into middle-class apartments

DEAR EDITOR: First of all, I had worked at Trumbull Memorial Hospital for 29 1/2 years. I have been out of there for the past 19 years. They made bad business decisions over the years. Putting that aside, the building should be made into Trumbull middle-class apartments — not low-income, not high-income (with the building not used at all). All this leads to fire taking place and vandalism, let alone stealing. They should use the money received from the state of Ohio from legal marijuana; it was $375,000. (According to a 27 News Youngstown report, which aired the last week of ...

Donald Trump’s threats to Iran are war crimes

DEAR EDITOR: On Easter Sunday morning, the president of the United States announced his intention to commit war crimes. That’s not hyperbole or partisan rhetoric. Legal scholars citing the laws of armed conflict, using the same framework American military commanders are trained on, confirm that deliberately targeting civilian power plants and bridges constitutes a war crime. Causing excessive suffering to civilian populations clears that bar. We called it a war crime after World War II. The label hasn’t changed. On April 6, The Vindicator ran the headline: “President ...

Trump is seriously out of his mind

On Easter morning, President Donald Trump posted: "Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! "Open the F----n' Strait, you crazy b-----ds, or you'll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH!" he continued, adding, "Praise be to Allah." Now, I ask you: If you were in the Iranian regime, would you be: (1) frightened by this post or (2) relieved that you were finally causing Trump to melt down? I'd guess (2). You'd see his post and figure that Trump —- posting on Easter Sunday — has finally gone utterly and definitively ...
