Don’t let AI determine our medical coverage

DEAR EDITOR: I’m writing this letter to inform Ohio citizens that in January 2026, Ohio and five other states will be a part of an unconscionable pilot program. This program, named “Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Rejection — WISeR Model,” will use artificial intelligence (AI), to determine whether prescribed medical procedures are eligible for Medicare coverage. The federal government plans to hire private AI companies to determine whether patients would be covered for certain procedures. Gun violence shouldn’t be a political football

DEAR EDITOR: The recent assassination of a well-followed young husband and father, a political activist, was distressing, uncalled for, and another unfortunate example of violence in the U.S. It’s news that appears to be daily, like the weather forecast. We expect it. As always, the response to the tragedy was quick and expected from our elected officials, those who, during such incidents, are often sought after for guidance and, more so, support, providing some actions that seek to remedy such occurrences. Shooters observed “target” practicing have already shot and killed one family pet and nearly residents in their own backyards. The shooters live one house down from the crossroads of Route 85 and Route 193 and are shooting across residents’ backyards and shooting toward a church four houses from 193. The Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office has been called numerous times by residents and have done nothing to stop the shooters. DEAR EDITOR: It is astonishing how quickly some reduce the Ukraine conflict to a simple fairy tale of “good versus evil.” The reality is far more uncomfortable. Ukraine is not the beacon of democracy it is so often portrayed to be. For decades it has been one of the most corrupt nations in Europe, run by oligarchs, rife with backroom deals and propped up by billions in Western aid that rarely reaches its citizens. DEAR EDITOR: Another senseless shooting by an angry, confused individual who decided to channel all of his deranged, misguided, mentally ill thoughts into killing innocent children.
