U.S. already has Greenland treaty

DEAR EDITOR:

President Donald J. Trump’s infantile obsession with seizing Greenland is completely irrational. The existing 1949 treaty between the United States and the Kingdom of Denmark already provides for “…establishing and / or operating such defense areas [military bases]…(for) defense of Greenland and the rest of the North Atlantic Treaty area.”

Further, the U.S. is specifically granted in the treaty full access to the air spaces and waters adjacent to Greenland, without compensation to Denmark. In the ensuing years, we have maintained military bases in Greenland as we have deemed necessary and can continue to do so.

The president’s threats to our European allies, threats to the survival of NATO, and the economic threats domestically through the newly threatened tariffs, serve no purpose toward ensuring the security of our country.
