Losing faith in the US is the American way

DEAR EDITOR:

I’ve been around long enough to experience many social and economic changes here in America, at which time many believed, to quote a 1965 song, we were on the “Eve of Destruction.”

Well, many of those concerns have been addressed, yet many remain, and here we are still relying solely on our strong democratic institutions, which enable democracy to function.

Our institution ensures government accountability via a framework for decision-making, public participation and a peaceful, constitutional transfer of power. Our legislative bodies, independent judiciaries and decision-making process support the foundation.

If I rely on history, many questionable current administrative actions that are obviously not in line with the democratic institution will pass, be properly addressed, ensuring the institution remains solid, remains a “for the people, by the people” democracy, ensuring that our government’s purpose is to serve the welfare of all the people.

Within this nearly one-year period, the current administration, via many executive orders, has consolidated power, resulting in direct, uncontrolled, legislative decision-making action that, to any high school-educated individual, is unconstitutional, direct opposition to our democratic institution process.

I must admit that so many of the current administration’s actions, which are strongly reframing our institution, are of major concern and are not being addressed, questioned democratically.

These actions resulting in the reframing of our institution may have irreversible democratic restructuring, one that changes what we as Americans have loved, fought for since the formation of the supporting document, e.g., “The Constitution.”

Many rights protected under this doctrine, such as fundamental rights, freedom of speech, popular sovereignty, and most importantly, the separation of powers, which prevents any single group from becoming dominant, are being dismantled.

Will history prove that our democracy will remain, America will still be considered a “bright star,” being unique in its devotion to liberty and democracy for all.

I hope so, but if such unconstitutional decisions continue, the institution will become too weak to support our foundation, a foundation based on the principles of equality, iunalienable rights, e.g., life, liberty and justice for all. I feel as if I am losing faith.

God bless and help America.
