Just another day in paradise or not?
DEAR EDITOR:
Sometimes I feel life as in “Driving Miss Daisy.”
After leaving the boundaries of youth, life becomes serious. Like it or not, we all face that last ride.
As contemptuous as it may sound, for me, it is hard to be Northern with approachable Southern respect.
At times, I surely feel I’m working on that plantation. Let me be the first to say, it has nothing to do with “Just living a dream of another day in paradise.” Let’s be clear.
My day begins: “Hoke, Hoke, I need you to do something.”
“Yes, Miss Daisy, what is it?”
“Hoke, I need you to trim the edge of the sidewalk and driveway.”
“Ok, Miss Daisy, you don’t have to do both sides?”
“No, Hoke, one side only.”
“But Miss Daisy, you own one foot on the other side of the driveway. ”
“Hoke, this is my property, I know what I own!”
“Miss Daisy, why don’t you want to do the other side?”
“Hoke, my neighbor will get mad at me, and might not mow it anymore.”
“But Miss Daisy, he’d be happy that you edged that side.”
“Hoke, do as I say, this is my property!”
“Oh, Miss Daisy. Yes, Miss Daisy.”
Believe it or not, age makes a difference.
