Huffman says Ohio legislators won’t bend to outside influences

Though the results of Ohio’s latest redistricting attempt have yet to be seen, state House Speaker Matt Huffman, R-Lima, should be commended for one thing: He says he will not give in to pressure from the White House to draw maps that meet the approval of President Donald Trump.

“I’m most interested in what residents of the state of Ohio have to say,” Huffman said when asked about Trump and national influence, according to the Ohio Capital Journal. “Of course, the President of the United States is an important person too, but there are 11 million-plus people in the state of Ohio.”

Sure, he’s already firing shots about a Democrat-drawn version of the map, supporters of which he says are demanding “It has to be this or nothing else.” But that is to be expected when the state’s elected officials start work on such a project.

While those in Columbus do their angling, Huffman is right to understand this is THEIR work to do.

“I think the main thing is: Avoid ancillary side conversations that are designed to incite people in Ohio or throughout the United States, stick to the Constitution and make decisions based on that,” he said, according to the Capital Journal.

Though the Trump administration has already pressed for redrawn maps that would help gain more seats in Congress, in states such as Texas, Huffman did an important thing by saying that kind of influence will gain no traction here.

“The state of Ohio is a sovereign entity … we make decisions about what is going on,” he said.

Good. That kind of attitude is a great start.

Now the task is for state stakeholders to develop fair and constitutional maps that will accurately reflect the will of all Ohio voters. Whether that comes to pass is yet to be seen. But in the meantime, it is oddly comforting to know that if a mess (or a perfect map) is to be made, it will be made right here in the Buckeye State.
