Orchids and onions

ORCHID: To talented international artist Remix Uno of Mexico City, whose enormous and beautiful mural is being finalized on a new North State Street, Girard, restaurant owned by Mexico City native Jorge Carreno. The mural adds wonderful color and flair to Girard’s downtown.

ONION: To the miscreant who last week doused a disabled man with a hot liquid, causing him to be taken to a Warren hospital with burns to his face. The man, 51 of Youngstown, was seated in his wheelchair in a West Market Street, Warren, parking lot, when someone approached and dumped a cup of boiling water on him. An ambulance was called, and the man was transported. We are aghast at what could have prompted such an inhumane act, and we hope a swift arrest is made.

ORCHID: To Panera Bread and Covelli Enterprises for their significant ongoing support of defeating breast cancer. Again this year, the companies in October is sponsoring Pink Ribbon Bagels at seven local stores in an effort to raise awareness and funds to benefit Mercy Health Foundation to support the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center in Youngstown.

ONION: To vandals that caused unnecessary work and expense by spray painting graffiti on several businesses in Niles’ east end. Similar markings were sprayed on several buildings. An orchid goes to Niles police, who, on increased area patrols, made an arrest after an alert officer heard the rattle of spray paint cans coming from backpacks of two suspects.

ORCHID: To the “Rosie the Riveters,” from the Mahoning Valley, including those honored last week at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor. The event recognized the important duty these women fulfilled by working in factories during World War II. The local “Rosies” honored are Mary Callahan of Cortland, Ethel McMullen of Youngstown, Esther Castellano of Warren and Frances Spahlinger of Lake Milton.
