David J. Carney 1956-2026
GIRARD — David James Carney, 69, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at home, after fighting a long, courageous battle with diabetes.
He was deeply loved by many and will be dearly missed. The touch he had on those he encountered will be part of the legacy he leaves for years to come. Our hearts are broken and forever saddened by the loss of a man who gave so selflessly his whole life. Time can never prepare you to say goodbye to someone that meant so much to so many.
David dedicated years to his gift of construction. The things he built will certainly still stand long after we are gone. David spent time working for the Carpenters Local Union 171, he established and ran Carney Construction for decades, and most recently, he dedicated his knowledge and time to Groover Roofing and Siding as the “right-hand man”, which he enjoyed up to his retirement a few short weeks ago.
He loved the outdoors, but he especially loved to fish. Whether it be fly fishing, deep sea fishing or fishing charters, David was all things fishing. He took many patient hours teaching his daughters, grandchildren, friends and anyone he could, the tips and tricks for catching the next big one.
But most of all, David loved his family; he was a provider who lived his life to make his family’s lives better. He looked out for them, ensuring they were taken care of until the very end. David adored his bride, loved his daughters, and was enamored by all eight of his grandchildren. There was not a mountain he would not have moved for any of them.
Left to cherish his memory, David leaves his wife of 47 years, Debby; his two daughters, Jodi (Matthew) Ciminero and Dr. Cassie (Anthony Foutz) Carney; his eight grandchildren, Noah, Brooklyn, Spencer, Ava, Matteo, AJ, Adeline and Andrew; his siblings, Kathy (Ken) Sinclair, Joann (Ed) Smith, George (Cheryl) Carney, James (Eleanor) Carney and William Carney; his sisters-in-law, Melissa Carney and Tia Carney; and his many nieces and nephews, as well as his great-nieces and great-nephews.
Preceding him in death are his father and mother, George and Norene Carney; his sister, Joyce Carney; and his brother, Thomas Carney.
David used to say, “Leave this place better than when you found it,” and he certainly did that.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Grace Fellowship Church in Niles. Doors open at 1 p.m.
Arrangements were entrusted to Carl W. Hall Funeral Home.
