David M. Carr 1951-2026

NILES — David M. Carr, 75, beloved coach, Niles park employee, devoted husband, father, family man and longtime servant of the Niles community, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, May 27, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Born April 2, 1951, in Wilsie, W.Va., David was the son of the late Maxwell and Mary Jackson Carr of Niles. He grew up in the area and was a 1970 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, where he was a standout football player.

After high school, Dave built a life centered on family, service and quiet passions. He married the love of his life, the former Cheryl F. Plesea, on Dec. 9, 1972, and they recently celebrated 53 years of marriage.

For more than 20 years, Dave was a familiar face around the community as a longtime employee of the Niles Park Department. He retired from the department in 2020, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to the city’s green spaces and public grounds.

But it was on the courts and fields where Dave truly shined as a mentor. He served as the coach for his daughter Devon’s softball and basketball teams. Those who played for him remember a man who coached with equal parts discipline and warmth, finding great joy not only in wins but also in watching young athletes grow. Through his coaching, he touched countless young lives in the Niles area.

In his free time, Dave loved to work on antique cars, patiently restoring them piece by piece. He was rarely without a Hot Wheels model in hand, and he amassed a notable collection over the years. He was also a lifelong avid Michigan Wolverines fan. His four faithful dogs, Stella, Jackie, Gilly and Buddy, were constant companions on trips to Waddell Park.

Besides his wife, Dave is survived by his beloved daughter, Devon Carr of Youngstown; a sister, Judy (Ross) Leach of Niles; two brothers-in-law, Dale (Debbie) Plesea of Sun City, Arizona, and Randy Plesea of Naples, Florida; and many extended family members and close friends.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral services or calling hours.

A memorial service to celebrate Dave’s life is being planned for later in the year. Details will be announced by the family at a future date.

Arrangements for Mr. Carr are being provided by the Lane Funeral Home, Mineral Ridge Chapel, 1350 N. Canfield Niles Road, Mineral Ridge.
