Marlene M. Fobes 1936-2026

JOHNSTON — Marlene Mae Fobes, 89, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at home.

Born Oct. 27, 1936, in Medina, she was the daughter of Lawrence Murray and Virginia Lee.

Marlene worked for Packard Electric for 32 years, retiring in 1997. She was known for her strong work ethic, her generosity and her unwavering devotion to the people she loved.

Marlene was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. Her home was a place of warmth and welcome, always open to anyone who needed a hot meal, a place to stay or simply a listening ear. Her greatest joy was her family and she cherished every moment spent with them.

She also had a special bond with her beloved dog, Blaze, who was her loyal companion for many years. Marlene was, without question, the best dog mom Blaze could have ever had.

A natural caretaker, Marlene spent her life helping others. One of her most meaningful acts of love was caring for her former husband, Robert Fobes, during his final months. She was honored to be by his side, offering comfort and support in every way she could.

Marlene enjoyed working in her yard and tending to her gardens. In her later years, she lovingly cared for her houseplants. She also found joy in crocheting and woodcarving, hobbies that reflected her creativity and patience.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Robert W. (Anna) Loney of Cortland; her grandchildren, Christina Loney of Cortland, Bradley (Charlie) Loney of Orwell, Joshua Loney of Cortland, Sharley (Will McLallen) McElhaney of Niles and Jonathan Abbuhl of Cortland; her great-grandchildren, Corey McElhaney, Madison Loney, Izaiah Loney and Bradley Loney Jr.; and her bonus great-grandchildren, Harland and Reed Swick. Marlene is also survived by her sisters, Mary Beth Hartley of Greenwich and Carol Kocher of Norwalk; her brother, Michael Murray of Norwalk; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Teresa Banjack; her sisters, Joan Nutter and Anita Murray; and her brother, Tilton Bowen.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Southern Care Hospice Services — Ashley, Erica and the Rev. Steve — and to Marlene’s special friend, Taeja, for the exceptional care and compassion they provided. They also wish to thank Melissa from Cornerstone Caregiving Home Care for her support.

Calling hours will be 10 a.m. to noon Friday, March 6, 2026, at Lane Funeral Home, Shafer-Winans Chapel, 164 N. High St., Cortland, OH 44410, with the funeral service beginning at noon, with Pastor Carla Davies officiating.

Burial will follow in Williamsfield Center Cemetery.
