Madeline M. Matyas 1925-2025

She was born Nov. 19, 1925, in Sykesville, Pa., a daughter of Martha and Andrew Petrulak and the youngest of 11 children.

Madeline graduated as salutatorian from West Farmington High School in 1943. Shortly after, she accompanied a friend who was applying to nursing school and decided to apply herself. She graduated from Warren City Hospital School of Nursing in 1946.

Madeline began her nursing career as a cadet nurse at the end of World War II, working at Trumbull Memorial Hospital on 5 East. She served in many areas of nursing, but especially enjoyed working in surgery and as a private nurse. She dedicated herself to caring for others until her retirement in 1983.

She married the love of her life, Andrew Matyas, in 1946, and they spent 57 years together building a life and raising their family in Warren. They shared a love of travel, taking many cruises through the Panama Canal, St. Thomas, Barbados, St. Martin and other beautiful destinations. As snowbirds, they divided their time between Ohio and Pompano Beach in South Florida.

An avid golfer, Madeline continued to play until the age of 94, participating with the Par Mates and other local leagues in Warren, as well as the 18- and nine-hole leagues at Pompano Beach Golf Course in Florida. She was especially skilled at chipping and putting and was proud to have “Beat the Pro” in 1999.

Madeline was active in her community, serving as a Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts leader for her children’s troops, volunteering with the Red Cross and participating in the Elks and Emblem clubs.

She was of Christian faith and a longtime member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her favorite pastimes included working on jigsaw puzzles, crocheting and solving crossword and word puzzles. She also enjoyed cooking. Making homemade soups and pierogies was her specialty.

She loved plants and flowers and took pride in her collection of indoor and outdoor greenery. Each day, she enjoyed sitting on her balcony with a cup of coffee, overlooking the Spanish River, watching the birds and admiring the palm trees.

Madeline will be remembered for her independence, kindness and the joy she brought to everyone who knew her. She always had a smile on her face and radiated a positive spirit.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Eisermann of Warren; grandchildren, Kelly Hartley

(Chris) of Atlanta, Georgia, Kurtis Eisermann of New Philadelphia, Cori Matyas (Kevin) of

Gainesville, Florida, and Holly Matyas (Giacomo) of Genoa, Italy; and great-grandchildren, Kenneth and Frederick Hartley of Atlanta, Georgia, and Davide, Samuele and Angelica Battarino of Genoa, Italy.

Madeline was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew; son, Joseph; granddaughter, Kristen Eisermann; her parents; and her brothers and sisters.

Her family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and aides who cared for her in her final days.

Calling hours will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2025, at Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, where funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2025, with the Rev. Fr. Miron Kerul-Kmec officiating. All who knew and loved Madeline are welcome to attend and celebrate her remarkable life.

Burial will follow in Pineview Memorial Park, Warren.
