Marilyn Kaighin Van Huffel Townsend 1932-2025
WARREN — Marilyn Kaighin Van Huffel Townsend, known affectionately as “Mimi” to her family and friends, passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, 2025.
She was born Oct. 20, 1932, in Cleveland, to Helene and Howard Kaighin.
She attended Ohio Wesleyan University and graduated from Katherine Gibbs School in New York City.
In 1953, she married Isadore Van Huffel in Warren and raised five children, Trish (Matt) Chase, Gretchen (Joseph) Altomonte, Howie (Terry) Van Huffel, William (Mindy) Van Huffel and Robert Van Huffel. Isadore preceded her in death.
Later in life, she met her beloved George Townsend, with whom she shared a passion for golf and the ocean. They enjoyed many happy years between Ohio and Stuart, Florida.
Through George, she became a devoted stepmother to Samantha (Dennis) Maloney and Seth (Jahnis) Townsend.
She is survived by her children and stepchildren, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mimi embodied charity, compassion, elegance and grace. She instilled these values in her family and extended them to her community. As a young girl, Mimi served as a Girl Scout during World War II, helped sell war bonds and even grew a Victory Garden. Her lifelong commitment to service included leadership roles with the Women’s Auxiliary of Trumbull Memorial Hospital, the Festival of Trees for the Warren YWCA and serving as president of the Trowel and Hoe Garden Club.
For those that did not know her as Mimi, she was also known as the “Cookie Lady.” Baking was an extension of her generous spirit and she delighted in sharing her homemade sweets with family and friends. In her memory, we ask to share a sweet treat and conversation with a loved one.
A private memorial service will be held for family and close friends, 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church of Warren.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the First Presbyterian Church of Warren or New Albany Presbyterian Church.
