Luther F. Shaver

HOWLAND — Luther Freeman Shaver, 82, of Hunt Club Trail NE, Howland, departed this life 8:25 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, following complications from an extended illness.

He was born Nov. 12, 1942, in Garland, Alabama, the son of Curtis and Willie Bell Herbert Shaver, residing in the area for 62 years, coming from Braceville.

Luther was employed with General Motors Corporation BOC Lordstown Division for 32 years as an assembler before retiring in 2000. He also worked for American Welding.

He was a member of East Side Church of Christ, where he served on the men’s council.

He enjoyed fishing, shopping, gardening and barbecuing, and was an avid Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers and Guardians fan.

He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict, receiving several honors.

He married JoAnn Williamson Shaver on Aug. 16, 2003.

Besides his wife of Howland, he leaves to mourn two sons, Luther Demon Shaver of Charlotte, South Carolina, and Shawn Yancey of Cleveland; three daughters, Mrs. Yolanda (Shawn J.) Peterson of Pittsburgh, Pa., Mrs. Shawna (Anthony Sr.) Dukes of Howland and Mrs. Dedra (Floyd) Green of Newman, Georgia; two brothers, Leroy Shaver of Warren and John Shaver of Girard; three sisters, Ms. Grace Dean, Ms. Gloria Shaver and Ms. Delores Shaver, all of Warren; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Ms. Theresa Shaver and Ms. Yvette Sellers; one sister, Ms. Ruby Murray; three brothers, Alvin Shaver, Theopolis Shaver and Earnie Dee “Acorn” Shaver; and one grandson, Pfc. Kai Y. Yancey.

Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025, at East Side Church of Christ, with calling hours 11 a.m. to noon.

Burial will take place in Meadow Brook Memorial Park Cemetery.

Arrangements of comfort were handled by the Sterling-McCullough Williams Funeral Home.
