Robert F. Thoma 1962-2025

CORTLAND — Robert Ferd Thoma, 63, of Cortland, passed away Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025, at St. Joseph Warren Hospital.

He was born Aug. 6, 1962, in Warren, a son of the late Ferd and Alores S. Walton Thoma. He married Lana Jo Fox in 1986.

In 1981, he graduated from LaBrae High School, and completed a food service program the same year, at TCJVS. While in high school, Robert traveled to England to perform in the Junior Military Band. He went on to graduate with an electronic engineering degree from ATES in 1984.

Robert was a sharpshooter and grenade expert while proudly serving in the United States Army. He retired as a slitter operator at Thomas Steel, after 32 years.

Robert attends Rock of Grace Church in Kinsman and even worked in the sound booth at one time.

Music was his language, solace and method to the world. He had a remarkable knowledge and passion for all forms of music. He loved to tell you about the HISTORY of music and anything related to it, including record producers, musicians, recording, mixing and mastering.

He especially enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter playing with Play-Doh and Legos. He also loved the beach.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Lana Jo Thoma of Cortland; son, Robert J. (Amanda) Thoma; and granddaughter, Audrey of Vienna; sister, Penny (George) Culver; and nieces, Heather (Tiffany, Christopher and Wesley), Kiri, Micaela, Delaney and Channing.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025, at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, at Rock of Grace Family Ministries, where Pastor Jordan Biel will officiate.

Interment will be in Dugan Cemetery, Fowler.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Carl W. Hall Funeral Home.
