Nicholas J. Carano 1941-2025

GIRARD — Nicholas J. Carano, 84, formerly of Hubbard, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2025.

Nicholas was born June 10, 1941, in Youngstown, a son of Nicholas A. and Margaret M. Tranick Carano.

He was a 1959 graduate of Ursuline High School and later graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Nick was the proud owner and operator for 50 years at Carano’s United Family Food in Hubbard, which later became Valu King and then an IGA store. After his retirement, he worked at Macali’s Giant Eagle in Niles for 10 years. He also was a substitute custodian at Niles City Schools.

He enjoyed running, bicycling, scuba diving and sky diving, and was an instrument-rated pilot.

Nick was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Girard, the Knights of Columbus and the Naval Reserve.

Nick was known as the “Bird Man.” Over the last 26 years, he shared his home with Ouija (pronounced Wee Gee), an umbrella-crested cockatoo, who was loved by everyone and especially enjoyed going on travels with Nick. He was a volunteer and made many visits with his cockatoo to area nursing homes in Trumbull and Mahoning counties.

His wife, the former Nancy J. McFall, whom he married Aug. 6, 1988, passed away May 2, 2018.

Nick will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his children, Nicholas J. Carano Jr. of Campbell and Michael (Pattie) Carano of Lordstown; stepchildren, Ronald (Mary) Fiedler of Hubbard, Donald (Kelly) Fiedler of Girard, Ellsworth Fiedler of Girard, Eleanor Fiedler of Girard and Edward Fiedler (Tonia Fox) of Hubbard; nine grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and son, David Carano.

There will be services held at noon Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025, with calling hours 10 a.m. to noon at Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.

Nick will be laid to rest next to his wife in Hubbard Union Cemetery.
