Mary M. Manwell 1937-2025

She was born Oct. 9, 1937, to Alfred R. and Ruth Patterson Dunlap.

Mary graduated at the top of her class from Franklin High School in New Athens in 1955, from Ohio Valley General Hospital Nursing School in 1958 and after working several years, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at The Ohio State University. A member of Champion Presbyterian Church for decades, she served as an elder, a Vacation Bible School teacher and a member of various committees, including a seemingly perpetual stint on the personnel committee.

Mary spent her life caring for everyone. As a nurse she did it all — taught nursing at several schools and worked on every kind of ward, from the ER to neuro to general nursing. She nursed neighbors and family members, often easing the journey of others’ loved ones as their lives were ending. Even in her retirement community, she could be found checking blood pressures and looking at injuries. One of her greatest joys was the month she spent working at a mission hospital in Belize, combining her love of travel, serving God and helping others. She will be remembered for her perpetual activity, her keen mind, her no-nonsense attitude and her ability to eat a piece of lasagna twice her size.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Earl.

She is survived by her daughters and their families, Elizabeth and Barbara, Matt Shockey and Tami Stevenson; grandson, Thomas Shockey; granddogs, Mavis and Fiona; and grandcats, Edith, Kaboodle and Polly Pott.

Calling hours will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, at Champion Presbyterian Church, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. A graveside service will be held immediately afterward. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any gifts be sent to one of her favorite charities, Cru.org or Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes.
